History
St. Comgall's Recreation Club was established in 1904. In those days the club was known as "The Rooms" or "The Reading Rooms". Older members of the club still use the name to this day.
Some comments from a long standing member,
"When I first became a member there was still a supply of newspapers and magazines available for members who could read them in the quieter moments...
... Membership at the time was ten shillings every year (50 pence). As an indicator of the prevailing economic climate in the 1950's, it was felt necessary to allow members who wished, to pay their membership fee in quarterly installments of half a crown."
After the 1970's, the site occupied by the parish parochial hall was cleared and the present buildings put in its place. As well as a large lounge with dance floor, there is a basement area and a fully equipped theatre seating almost 400 people. It is a matter of some pride that the "auditorium" as it is known was the only purpose built theatre in Larne and is far ahead of many other facilities in the town in terms of comfort, equipment and location. Many famous artists and groups have appeared on its stage including The Chieftans, The Ulster Orchestra , Paddy Reilly, The Scottish Ballet and many of the top drama groups.
With over 100 years of providing recreation facilities to the community in Larne, County Antrim, St. Comgalls continues to grow from strength to strength.
